James E. Ogle
Inducted in 2004
He became the first wrestling coach at Sequoyah High School this past season as a volunteer so the students who were interested could have another venue in the sports arena. He has already earned their love and respect and intends to volunteer again next season. |
Mr. Ogle has been associated with Isshin-Ryu Karate for thirty-one years and is very dedicated to the system. He presently holds the rank of Hachi Dan. He has been a competitor in numerous tournaments since 1975 and won many trophies. However, he relishes the friendships that he has developed through tournament attendance more than the trophies. He is also a conscientious referee believing that everyone should be treated equally and fairly. When he is taking a break from refereeing, you can find him walking around the tournament area encouraging competitors and fellowshipping with his comrades. He has also been very active in promoting Isshin-Ryu through demonstrations and seminars.
Fighting is Mr. Ogle’s forte. His first instructor, Master Pete Mills, recognized this in August 1973, when Mr. Ogle registered with his class. Kata was just something he did not have time for, but being a disciplined instructor, Master Mills structured his class so that James always had to run his charts and kata before sparring. This somehow became routine for him and as of today he usually conducts his class in the same manner and teaches his students the importance of kata. He has learned to appreciate every aspect of the art as long as it is practical.
Isshin-Ryu karate is Mr. Ogles first and foremost art. However, he has been blessed to also be able to learn from other instructors and systems. He has cross-trained in Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Brazilian Ju-jitsu, and Goshen Ju-jitsu (in which he holds a Ni-Dan rank).
In Radford, Virginia at the Martial Arts University, hosted at the Radford University campus, Mr. Ogle served as an associate staff member along with Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, Hoyce Gracie, Willie “Bam Bam” Johnson, Mark Coleman, Mark Kerr, Pete Mills, and Jerry Beasley. He has worked out with other martial artist outside of Isshin-Ryu such as: Mr. Kim, Russ Hanky, Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti, and others. Mr. Ogle is a co-founder of the Southern Pankration Competition Circuit, along with Master Butch Hill. He is the president of the Universal Isshin-Ryu Family, an organization for black belts only. He is also a member of the United States Judo Association.
In 2002, Mr. Ogle was selected “Isshin-Ryu Sensei of Sensei.” In 2003, the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame selected him as “Master Instructor of the Year.”
